Mr. Fothergill’s Tomato (Plum) Roma VF Seeds

3.50 “Price excl. VAT: 3.50

Heavy cropping, fleshy, deep red plums that are almost seedless. Perfect for pasta and sauces. Semi-determinate.

Technically a fruit, but also Ireland’s favourite summer vegetable! No surprise because nothing you buy beats the flavour of home-grown tomatoes.

For greenhouse crops, sow indoors January-April. A warm kitchen windowsill is all you need for starting these seeds. Sow thinly, 0.5cm (¼”) deep, in a pot of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Transplant to individual pots when 10-15cm (4-6″) tall. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Plant out April to May to large pots, growing bags or greenhouse border. Harvest: June-October. For outdoor crops, delay indoor sowing until March or April. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into warm, well-drained soil, 45cm (18″) apart, when frosts are over. Harvest from August onwards.

This variety does well outside and can be grown in large patio pots, with support to keep branches off the ground. Trim plants if they become too large.
