Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise) in 13cm Pot

These beautiful indoor plants are not currently in bloom, but given time (it may take several years) they will produce spectacular bright orange and midnight blue flowers that resemble the head of a colourful crane. These exotic blooms rise above paddle-shaped, emerald-green leaves, which may shred with age but remain an attractive feature throughout the year.

The bird of paradise makes a striking houseplant for a bright, well-lit room. In summer, it can be placed (pot and all) in the middle of a sunny border to create an instant tropical effect.

During the growing season, water regularly and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly. Water sparingly in winter and top-dress each spring. Remove old, shredded leaves as they age. Repot into a larger container in autumn. Plants can be placed outside from May to September, provided there is no risk of frost. They require winter protection and can be kept in a greenhouse or conservatory from October to April.
